The Salinas Lettuce Strike
In Salinas, California, 1934,there has been a strike called the Salinas Lettuce Strike. This strike has caused the formation of the Filipino Labor Union (FLU), founded by Rufo Canete. The reason this union has been created is because the Filipinos have been demanding better working conditions. The Salinas Lettuce Strike consists of the Filipino Labor Union. Some of the Filipino demands are higher wages, freedom on Sundays and holidays, and 48 hour work weeks.
Very bad things have happened to the union. Vigilantes have burned labor camps owned by Rufo Canete every time the Filipino Labor Union has organized demonstrations. If the police were called, then the whole Filipino Labor Union Leadership would get arrested.
Before the Filipinos came to America they were infatuated with what they heard about America. Men between age 18 and 25 came to America to work and get an education. But in the end the jobs they received were the jobs that no one else wanted.
