Who’s Who in the George Milton Trial: John Tyler

By: Rebecca Sokol

Who is he?

John Tyler, better known as “The Boss”, is the owner of the Tyler ranch. John is 55 years old and he was born on the ranch, and lived there for almost his whole life. John's job of owning the ranch has been passed down through 3 generations. John has a son who works at the ranch as well, Curley. Curley also has a wife named Rachel.

How’s he involved?

Being the boss at the ranch, John is involved with the murder case. John first met  George Milton and Lennie Small when they interviewed for the job. John says that when he first met George and Lennie he instantly knew that there was a problem with the pair. John says that George acted more powerful than Lennie, and that he never let talk during the interview. John says he knew about their other job and that they left for an unspoken reason. In and interview John said, “Surprised that Lennie killed her, but not surprised that he had the strength to do it.” When he was asked if he knew why Lennie went down to the brush he said, “Lennie went down there because he was scared and just wanted a safe place to hide.” He also thought that George went down to the river to chase after Lennie and to kill him out of hate and to end his burden of caring for Lennie.
