Advice for the Great Depression

By Julia Anderson

Dear SVT,

In my family we often find ourselves with little money for food. We are all out of ideas

and if you could give me a simple money saving cooking idea that I could try that would be great.

From,

A concerned mother

To All Concerned Mothers,

You are not pitied for asking for creative cooking ideas! Since rice, beans, and cheese are

major sources of protein, you might want to look at a meal that involves some of those (instead of meat, which is much more expensive). This is a simple idea that should work and brighten your day.

Dear SVN,

I am a teen and often find myself getting all sorts of pimples. I have tried a few different

creams and none of them have worked. I have a party in a few weeks and I don't want to have a red face the whole time. It would be great if I could make a recipe from home to fix this problem.

Thank you,

In Need of a Lifesaver

Dear in Need of a Lifesaver,

There are many simple recipes that you can make at home that work to help solve your

problem of break outs. However many of them take time. Some very simple remedies include:

  • Washing your face every night and morning, this helps get rid of dirt before it soaks into your pores and creates pimples.

  • Put a pot of boiling water on the table and holding your face over it, and putting a

towel over your head and the bowl. When 5-8 min have passed take the towel off and rub your face with it.

  • Get a bowl of white sugar (about ¼ cup) and cut a lemon in half. Tie your hair back (a bun works best). Dip the lemon in the sugar and start scrubbing your face while continuing to dip the lemon in the sugar. Spread it around your face until the sugar is falling off or you are out and really scrub it in. Wait a minute or two and then wash it and lightly pat your face dry (This will work best after steaming your face).

Hope these ideas work,

SVN

If there's one thing the Amish are known for, it's their bread. This recipe for Amish Buttermilk Biscuits is one of the best we've found. Fluffy and buttery, it is delicious on its own, but served alongside just about any dinner, these biscuits are absolutely divine. The next time you need to whip up a homemade bread recipe for your family, turn to this easy recipe. It's a classic that won't be going out of style any time soon!

Serves: 10

Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour

  • 3/4 teaspoon salt

  • 3 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 4 tablespoons shortening

  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven

  2. Combine the dry ingredients together in a bowl.

  3. Mix in the shortening until the mixture is crumbly.

  4. Add the buttermilk and mix just until combined. The dough will be sticky.

  5. Put the dough on a floured surface. Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness. Use a biscuit cutter to cut about 10 biscuits, rerolling the dough as needed.

  6. Place biscuit on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. *If you're in a hurry, drop these by rounded tablespoons into a greased pan. They won't be a perfect biscuit shape, but they cook up just as nicely and tastes just as good!*

Note: Don’t have buttermilk on hand? That’s OK…we never have it on hand either. But you can easily make buttermilk with milk and vinegar. Just put one tablespoon of vinegar in a measuring cup. Fill up the rest of the cup with milk and let it sit for 5 minutes. Voila… 1 cup of buttermilk! If you have half & half or heavy cream, you can use those in just the same way. If you need more than one cup for a different recipe, just make the same way, adding 1 tablespoon of vinegar to each cup of milk.
