A Devastating Number of Deportees Arrive in California

As the “double whammy” of drought and depression deepens on the Great Plains, many farmers are being forced to give up and leave their farms. Few people have money and are able to continue farming and stay in their homeland. The southern farmers, who are plagued by poverty, make up the majority of citizens in the Great Plains. They have started a trip to the West Lands, with the hope of finding plenty of work there. What the Southern farmers don’t know is that the West is already crowded with many other people searching for work.

Last month, around 7,000 poverty stricken migrant workers, mostly from Oklahoma, arrived in California. The government, forced into action by this situation, had been obligated to send in 136 deputies to the state lines to turn back the migrants.

These days, the government is trying to deal with multiple complaints coming from the bordering states, like Arizona, that are angry that California was trying to "dump hoboes" back on them.

However, as many Californian citizens said, “They are sympathising with the migrant workers that have just arrived because they are white, in contrast to other Mexican and Filipino workers”.
